Job Descriptions

Chairwoman

  • Is the official representative of the AWS in relation to the public
  • Represents the AWS at events, seminars and conferences to which she is invited  
  • Chairs Committee meetings
  • Sets Committee meeting dates and agendas, and checks meeting minutes
  • Is responsible for corresponding on behalf of the AWS
  • Chairs the AGM
  • Supervises standing working groups (jointly with the Vice-Chairwoman and Deputy Vice-Chairwoman)
  • Writes Chairwoman's Column for LINK Magazine
  • Liaises with the Law Society and other Recognised Groups of the Law Society
  • Liaises nationally and internationally with other women's groups and organisations
  • Represents the AWS on external bodies
  • Prepares a year-end report for the AGM

Vice-Chairwoman

  • Deputises for the Chairwoman at functions and meetings
  • Organises AGM and Dinner at which she stands for election
  • Provides assistance to the Chairwoman with other functions as required
  • Chairs standing working groups as agreed with Chairwoman
  • Prepares business plan for her year of office for approval by Executive and National Committees

Deputy Vice-Chairwoman

  • Deputises for Chairwoman if Vice-Chairwoman is not available
  • Provides assistance to the Chairwoman if Vice-Chairwoman not available
  • Is responsible for specific projects as agreed with the Chairwoman

Treasurer

  • Is responsible for preparing the Law Society Grant Application on an annual basis
  • Keeps proper accounting records (supported by outside administrative book keeping support)
  • Keeps the National Committee informed of the AWS' financial situation
  • Makes and receives payments, including approving payment of members' expenses
  • Advises on, monitors and arranges investment of AWS funds
  • Prepares year-end accounts
  • Prepares tax returns
  • Is responsible for overview of AWS business relationships and for checking all invoices

Honorary Secretary

  • Prepares notice of AGM and Secretary's Annual Report
  • Is responsible for advising on compliance with and changes to the Constitution
  • Attends Law Society Secretaries and Presidents and Secretaries Conference

Public Relations Officer

  • Deals with publicity and contact with the media
  • Is responsible for raising profile of the AWS and publicising its events and services  
  • Prepares press releases
  • Is responsible for overseeing web information

Executive Committee Members (including office-holders) are expected to:

  • Attend Executive Committee meetings on a regular basis (at least half of all Committee meetings annually) and send apologies if unable to attend
  • Participate in at least one working group or special project per year
  • Attend working group meetings regularly and send apologies if unable to attend
  • Support AWS aims and policies
  • Inform the Chairwoman of issues which should be brought to her attention (e.g. consultation papers, ideas for events, press articles)
  • Make a contribution to the work of the Committee outside Committee meetings and perform tasks agreed to be undertaken within defined timescales
  • Assist with fundraising and sponsorship as required
