AWS Community

The AWS is firmly committed to supporting and participating in a wide range of charity and community projects.

SGOSSSchool Governors

The AWS held an event with School Governors One Stop Shop, sponsored by the City of London Corporation, aimed at encouraging solicitors to become governors for schools that would benefit from their expertise. Lawyers have transferable business skills which can be used in different contexts. Solicitors who have become governors have stated how their professional and personal experiences have been enriched by the work that they do for schools. For more information, go to www.sgoss.org.uk

ILBFLaw Books for Africa, Asia and the Caribbean

The AWS supports the work of the International Law Book Facility, a charity which provides printed legal texts to professional bodies, advice centres, pro bono groups, law schools and those involved in access to justice in the common law jurisdictions of Africa, Asia and the Caribbean. For more information, see www.ilbf.org.uk

Homes in Zimbabwe

Homes in Zimbabwe (charity registration no. 1104512) was established in 2004 to raise funds for the maintenance of retirement homes in Zimbabwe. The homes were in serious need of repair on account of the country’s economic collapse and high inflation, which had completely eroded their financial reserves. Today Homes in Zimbabwe have had to divert almost all of their resources to importing food and fuel to safeguard the very lives of the elderly of all races living in retirement homes and many others still living in their own homes, often alone. With inflation now in excess of 200,000%, rendering any pension worthless, and there being virtually no food in the country, donors help to save the pensioners from starvation.

AWS will be supporting Homes in Zimbabwe at the 2009 AGM and Champagne Reception

Fundraising

The AWS has held events to raise funds for Shelter, Global Witness, Breast Cancer charities and Amadudu, a refuge for women fleeing domestic violence.

Environment

The AWS endorsed a Women’s Manifesto on Climate Change produced by the Women’s Environmental Network and the National Federation of Women’s Institutes.
