AWS Executive 2009-2010

Chairwoman - Dr Clare McConnell

Clare ConnellClare is a partner and head of the Projects Practice at international law firm Stephenson Harwood. She has significant experience of advising private sector consortia and public sector organisations on infrastructure projects in the transportation and health sectors.

Clare has been a member of the AWS since 1997. During this time she has had special responsibility for public relations, developing the AWS logo and brand and working closely with The Law Society as she represents the AWS on The Law Society’s Council.

Law is a business and Clare’s theme for her year is the promotion of women solicitors who are in the business of providing legal services. The AWS aims to be the essential national network promoting the potential and success of every woman solicitor. This year Clare, together with the National Committee, wants to work with women solicitors in the City, the regions and high street practices and with those who advise commerce, industry and government in order to assist them in realising their potential.

Clare is also a trustee and non-executive director of Regent’s College. London

Vice-Chairwoman - Christl Hughes

Christl HughesChristl Hughes is a High Street practitioner with Barlows Solicitors in Leicester City Centre specializing in Employment law and other contentious work plus Practice Management.

She is a local conciliator for the Legal Complaints Service and a student mentor for De Montfort University.

She was articled in Knightsbridge and then moved to the Midlands shortly after qualifying. A former President of Leicestershire Law Society she has also sat on the Good Practice and Regional Liaison Committees of Resolution and is 2009 President of Leicester Medico Legal Society.  As a longtime member of the AWS Christl has responsibility on the National Executive Committee for the Mentoring Scheme.

Deputy Vice-Chairwoman - Saadia Siddiqui

Saadia SiddiqiSaadia is a solicitor at Bankside Law Ltd and qualified in 2002. She specialises in defending cases of serious fraud, business crime and other serious crime including cases which demand a careful and sensitive approach. She has also acted for individuals in criminal appeal cases.

Saadia has further sector experience in the regulatory and disciplinary field, having assisted in a number of cases involving chiropractic and other regulatory work, and has experience of private civil actions against the police.

Saadia has been a member of the Association of Women Solicitors (AWS) since 2000 and was Chair of AWS (London Group) in 2007/2008. She is a long term supporter of the AWS and its goal of representing women and their achievements in the legal field.

Saadia joined the National Committee in 2007 and is currently Co-Chair of Law Reform and Research for the Association.

Treasurer - Sarah Austin

Sarah AustinSarah obtained her Bachelors in Business Administration in 1991 whilst working full time in the City of London in the banking and investment management sector. Sarah studied law at Guildhall University, London and was admitted to the Roll as a solicitor in 1996. After heading up private client departments in the City, Sarah set up her own practice Austins which is based in Chiswick.
Sarah is a qualified Trust and Estate Practitioner in onshore jurisdictions.

Sarah is keen to promote women’s small business interests. She is a member of business networks with similar goals. This is in addition to being a member of the Law Society’s Probate Section, Sole Practitioners Group, Black Solicitors Network and Solicitors for the Elderly.

Honorary Secretary - Tilly Rubens

Tilly RubensTilly is a partner at Alan Edwards & Co in Notting Hill, London. She specialises in housing and general litigation work. Tilly undertakes both publicly funded and private work. She is a member of the Housing Law Practitioners Group and Legal Action Group.

Tilly has a particular interest in the proposed changes to public funding and women in the judiciary. She has been involved with the AWS campaign to encourage more women to apply for judicial and public appointments which was launched in January 2009.

She writes on a regular basis for the AWS magazine LINK and has also had a number of articles published in The Times on issues relevant to women and the law.
